Prerequisites

There are no real prerequisites for running FFXIV on Mac but the most notable aspect to take into consideration is the performance based on the model of Mac that you have.

Note:
You do not need a Mac license to play FFXIV on Mac. That is a requirement for the official FFXIV on Mac client, which has a much lower performance than XIVonMac. However, if you already have a Mac license, this will also work just fine.
The Steam license is also compatible with XIVonMac, though you will have to have Steam installed on your Mac: https://store.steampowered.com/about/

I would advise against a base model Mac unless you’re okay with slower frame rates (roughly 30-50 FPS). At the time of writing the M1 Max is the lowest recommended spec for M1 or Pro for any other M-series Mac. Check on the webpage below for the most up-to-date benchmark results, which illustrates the expected performance:

Installing FFXIV on a Mac

Rather than using the official Mac client from FFXIV’s website the best option is to use https://www.xivmac.com/, which is tuned for better performance on a Mac but also comes with Dalamud and ReShade.

There is a fantastic, beginner-friendly guide here, which comes complete with a video guiding you through every step of the way: https://www.xivmac.com/frequently-asked-questions#xiv-on-mac-visual-setup-guide

If you’re comfortable with installing FFXIV on a Mac you can skip the guide and go straight to the downloads section, where the setup is very similar to how you would install FFXIV on Windows. After that, the login process is practically identical to Windows.
